Arrival

If the box arrives this week it will conclude that period of your life that you have lived up to now. Exciting. However should the box fail to arrive you would doubt that the box were ever to arrive. The snow in the streets will have melted, revealing all this winter’s trash; isn’t spring just the worst? But still even after such a wait the box will not have arrived. Belief in the box’s arrival is good in the early morning just after waking to the too-loud scratchy pre-recording of the muezzin booming from the tower, when stumbling about in your nightgown excited for the coffee, thinking: yes the package will arrive today, I can feel it. Still by early-afternoon when you’ve come down from the coffee, startled witless by yet another call to prayer, you’ll again doubt that the box will ever arrive. But lying in bed at night, listening to the automatic gun-fire in the distance, just as sleep alights up into the branches of your mind, you’ll receive again the resilient and incorruptible belief that the box will indeed arrive.
