The Nineties

Fax machines were all
the rage and the kids

painted the town navy
blue in their sand

washed cut off ripped
denim shorts, skipping

down the street to the
bodega on the corner

to buy Venus flytraps
or Heroine
or bubble gum

all the while a constant
rumble coming from

the street, inspiring a few
to learn how to play

the piano, all the while
their plastic blow-up

cobra snakes and plush
stuffed lemurs sit

complacent in a dusty
corner of the room
